Where are you from?
Born in Miami, Florida

What is your full time job?
Manufactures Representative in Auto body industry.

What got you started Turning/Pen making?
My wife suggested I look into turning. I Took a class at Woodcraft and did not like it.
Then she suggested a class on pen turning. After that I was hooked. Went out and made my investments in the tools needed

How long have you been Turning?
Started turning pens in 2014

Slimline (ugh) curly maple blank

Trying out the new Oscar dressed with Emerald Green Abalone

Gisi style segmented blanks

12-21VS.

Is there a technique or tool you want to learn?
To use the skew I have collecting dust.

What was your biggest turning Fail?
I Was doing a Jerry Bailey segmented Gisi blank and the end blew. First time I felt like crying.

Magic Skew

Do you use a dust collection system?  If show which?
Yes newly acquired HF 2hp Dust Collector System. Still have to do wiring and plumbing.

TBC or Mandrel?
TBC (80%) mandrel the rest.

Whats your sanding/finishing Method?
I was deathly afraid of CA because I couldn't get a good finish then Matt Sprunger taught me how to do a great CA finish.
Still use his method to this day.
Mercury Adhesives has helped make that finish even better.

Do you cast blanks?
Not yet but toying with the idea.

PR,  Alumilite, or Epoxy?
When I take the plunge will do PR, Alumilite and Epoxy.

Whats one thing you would tell a new turner?
The one thing that I learned is patience. If you don't have patience find it. If you can't find it try another hobby. That is for turning and blank making.

Who's work do you follow?   Other makers.
Jon David Jones, Chad Schimmel, Dale Pankala, Patterson Grant, Les Elm.

Where are you from?
Clinton, WA (on beautiful Whidbey Island)

What is your full time job?
Retired (formerly IT)

What got you started Turning/Pen making?
My wife said I needed a hobby to help me stay sane.  General consensus is that it was too late.

How long have you been Turning?
20+ years

What was your first pen,  kit/blank?
It’s been too long for my memory.

What is your favorite pen that you have made?
POW/MIA

What is the last pen you made?
Jr. George fountain pen out of a nice Madrone blank.

What else do you like to make besides pens?
Mostly a mess but sometimes a seam ripper will fall off the lathe.

Do you sell your pens?  If so how?
We market through Facebook and have a Shopify web site.

What is your favorite kit?
Probably the Jr. George antique silver.

What is your favorite blank material to use?
WOOD.

What kind of lathe do you use?
My primary wood lathe is a Jet 1221vs with a dedicated Jet 1015vs for buffing and another Jet 1015vs for sanding / cleaning / overflow finishing and backup turning.  Another metal lathe is on the way.

Is there a technique or tool you want to learn?
I’m pretty comfortable with the processes we use.

What was your biggest turning Fail?
Mounting a very nice bowl blank on my big lathe and forgetting to turn the speed down before hitting the go switch.  It bounced off the plywood wall behind my lathe, whizzed past my ear hitting the ceiling and far wall.

Favorite Turning tool?
½” round bottom skew.

Do you use a dust collection system?  If show which?
Yes, Grizzly cyclone collector.

TBC or Mandrel?
TBC without the bushings.

Whats your sanding/finishing Method?
I seldom sand blanks before finishing.  CA and accelerator and Micro Mesh followed up by a good buffing.

Do you cast blanks?
No

PR,  Alumilite, or Epoxy?
See above.

Whats one thing you would tell a new turner?
Run, save yourself while you can.  Or, there is usually more than one way to perform an operation, find one that works for you and ignore the rest of the “experts”.

Who's work do you follow?   Other makers.
Patterson Grant, Jon David Jones, Kenneth Wines, Robert Kulp, William Menard and many more.
